The tach needle on my year 2000 Cub Cadet 7260 compact tractor is swinging wildly so that it is often hard to know exactly what the RPM's read. I see that there is a cable that runs from the instrument panel to the engine. How might I fix this? It was not acting this way when I first bought it.

Sounds like it might be the tach itself, and I don't think many are serviceable. I'd probably remove and grease the cable with white grease or a specialty lubricant. However, I'd be aware that there'd be a very slim chance that a broken part in the send unit could be released by removing the cable and then drop into the oil pan.

Greasing the cable would incidentally determine if the cable were broken. I might also hook the cable end to a variable speed drill motor and run it at half speed with the cable as straight as possible. If the rpm then were constant the tach unit wouldn't be the problem. I'm not aware of anything like a slip clutch in tach drives but I guess anything is possible. ....
